Celebrate National Ice Cream Day with a Tea Affogato

Sunday, July 19 is National Ice Cream Day. At Teawaves, we’re celebrating one of our favorite summertime treats—a Tea Affogato.

If you’ve ever enjoyed a traditional Italian affogato, you know the concept is wonderfully simple: hot espresso poured over cold vanilla ice cream. The result is a dessert that’s rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced.

But who says coffee should have all the fun?

At Teawaves, we love giving classic favorites a fresh twist. Our Tea Affogatos pair our premium loose-leaf tea with creamy vanilla ice cream to create a dessert that’s refreshing, elegant, and surprisingly easy to make at home.

Our Favorite Tea Affogato Pairings

🍵 Matcha Affogato

Smooth, earthy, and vibrant.

Our ceremonial-style Matcha creates a beautiful contrast with vanilla ice cream, producing a rich, creamy dessert with subtle sweetness and a gorgeous green color.

Perfect for: Matcha lovers and anyone looking for a sophisticated dessert.

Feel free to grab our Matcha here:

Earl Grey Affogato

Bright, citrusy, and aromatic.

The bergamot notes in Earl Grey complement vanilla beautifully, creating a flavor that’s reminiscent of a creamy London Fog latte—but as dessert.

Perfect for: Afternoon entertaining or a relaxing evening treat.

🍂 Spiced Chai Affogato

Warm, comforting, and full of spice.

The cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and clove in our Spiced Chai transform vanilla ice cream into an indulgent dessert that’s almost like chai-spiced ice cream—without any extra work.

Perfect for: Anyone who loves warm spices and comforting flavors.

How to Make a Tea Affogato

Making a Tea Affogato takes less than five minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops of premium vanilla ice cream (dairy free ice cream works as well!)
  • Freshly brewed Teawaves Matcha, Earl Grey, or Spiced Chai
  • Optional garnish: cinnamon, cocoa powder, whipped cream, or a shortbread cookie

Directions

  1. Place two scoops of vanilla ice cream into a small dessert bowl or glass.
  2. Brew your favorite Teawaves tea a little stronger than usual:
  • Matcha:Whisk 1–2 teaspoons of Matcha with about 2 ounces of hot (not boiling) water.
  • Earl Grey:Steep 1–2 teaspoons of loose tea in about 4 ounces of hot water for 3–5 minutes.
  • Spiced Chai:Steep 1–2 teaspoons in about 4 ounces of near-boiling water for 5–7 minutes.
    1. Pour the hot tea directly over the ice cream just before serving.
    2. Enjoy immediately while the hot tea melts the ice cream into a creamy, flavorful dessert.

Make It Your Own

Tea Affogatos are incredibly versatile. Try experimenting with:

  • A sprinkle of cinnamon over the Chai version.
  • A drizzle of honey with Earl Grey.
  • White chocolate shavings with Matcha.
  • Caramel sauce for an extra indulgent treat.
